How COVID-19 Is Changing Nail Trends in 2020 and Beyond
Although many of us stopped getting dressed up over the past couple of months of sheltering in place, we are still taking time to do our nails, even nail artist Miss Pop. “It is the beauty I do for myself,” she says. “It might seem like a tiny detail, but to me, it’s what I see of myself every day. I really look forward to painting them differently every week.”
Instead of picking just one hue, she’ll sometimes coat every nail with a different color and has noticed others have taken the same route. “All of my friends who felt obligated to wear plain nudes and pale pinks to their offices to look ‘professional’ are suddenly able to wear whatever color they want,” notes Miss Pop. So while working from home, they’re finally trying the rainbow look.
Over the past year, the look has become known as the Skittles manicure (or gradient nails, if you stick to one hue). Before the pandemic, Miss Pop created a bright variation for the M Missoni fall 2020 presentation back in February with blues, yellow, pink, orange, and red, which has been a popular reference lately.
“To get this look at home, all you need is five fabulous polishes you love,” she explains. However, if you were wondering what the exact colors she used were, they’re OPI’s Nail Lacquers in Mariachi Makes My Day, Don’t Tell a Sol, Telenovela Me About It, Mi Casa Es Blue Casa, Verde Nice to Meet You, and Hue is the Artist?.
